Advocacy Grants Progam Frequently Asked Questions

1.   When is the deadline for the 2009 Promoting Policy Change grant cycle?

June 11th, 2009 at 8p.m. eastern.

2.   Will late proposals be accepted?

No.

3.   Are early decisions ever made?

No.  We work to vet each proposal thoroughly.  That process, along with the writing of the docket and convening of the Review Committee, needs about a full three months to play out.

4.   When is the deadline for Rapid Response applications?

The first business day of each month at 8pm, eastern.

5.   Why do we have to email our applications in?  Can't we just mail in or fax them?

Emailing both Teresa and asha provides every applicant as close to an indisputable record of their proposal being sent as we can manage. Snail mail can arrive late or not arrive at all. Emailing both of us seems to afford applicants the greatest protection.  It also cuts down on the unnecessary use of paper and facilitates the grant review committee review process.

6.   Am I eligible for a Rapid Response grant if we are facing a sudden money shortage?

Rapid Response is to be used ONLY on those occasions that present an otherwise unpredictable but time-sensitive special opportunity to advance broader drug policy reform.  We appreciate that we are in a very challenging economic cycle and we know many advocacy organizations have lost funding.  But we simply do not have the funds to support the many budgetary shortfalls that are out there.  We wish we could.

7.   The cover sheet and application is a PDF!  How can I write in the body of them?

All you need to do is download the application where the link directs you to do so.  On some machines, when you save it to your file or desktop, you can save it in MS Word, allowing you to write in the body of the document.  In other cases, when you arrive at the cover page and application, select all, copy, cut and paste them into an MS word document.

8.   Do I have to submit all the required paperwork along with my proposal?

No.  We only need that once a grant is made.  To do so before is not necessary.

9.    Are grant recipients required to attend the International Drug Policy Reform Conference in Albuquerque, November 12-14?

No, but we strongly encourage you to do so.  The Reform Conference (www.reformconference.org) is not only the single best place to meet allies in the drug policy reform movement, but also to expand your understanding of broader drug policy reform on both a national and international level.

10. Will DPA be providing scholarships for people to attend the conference as it has in years past?

We fully expect to be able to provide scholarships and will let you know about how to apply for them either late this summer or in the early part of the fall.  But you should allot monies in your budget as well.
