Job Announcement: Managing Director, Finance and Administration

The Drug Policy Alliance is seeking a new Managing Director, Finance and Administration ("Director") to oversee the finance, administration, human resources, and information technology functions for DPA. The Director will be a critical part of the senior management team at a crucial juncture in the organization's strategic growth.  The Director will work closely with the Executive Director and the Board to help lead, guide and shape the organization. He or she must have a solid financial, administrative and management background with a strong commitment to the mission of DPA.  The successful candidate must be capable of integrating smoothly into the senior management at DPA and fit into the organization's culture. 

Because this is an executive position, DPA requires someone who is a bright, confident, hands-on manager, an effective problem solver, and a self-starter. The successful candidate must have a thorough understanding of accounting and fiscal operations, information technology, contract management, project management and human resources. He or she will have strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, a hands-on management style and the ability to address and solve problems or issues as they arise. In addition, he or she will be diplomatic, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment as well as a sense of humor.

The successful candidate must have a bachelor's degree, with an advanced degree and/or a CPA preferred. He or she should have knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles in relation to nonprofit entities, and experience with IRS 501 (c)(4) organizations is strongly preferred.  Comparable experience would be considered.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Oversight, analysis, planning and leadership of the Drug Policy Alliance's fiscal, budgeting and financial reporting functions; develops and implements financial policies and procedures
  • Manages the organization's $10 million budget, targeted for 10% annual growth and prepares consolidated annual agency budget and administrative department budgets
  • Works with other departments to improve workflows and internal controls
  • Ensures that all IRS regulations governing non-profits and other laws, rules and regulations are being followed
  • Oversees DPA's cash management and investment strategy
  • Oversight of all human resource issues including hiring, training, recruitment and retention, and handling the compensation and benefits packages of DPA staff
  • Reviews and approves expenditures to ensure compliance with budget and efficient use of funds; ensures maximum receipt of potential funding and revenue
  • Oversees the development and implementation of internal controls to safeguard financial assets
  • Oversees all technology programs and initiatives and supervises all hardware and software support, ensuring data integrity and security 
  • Generally oversees office operations, including the supervision of support staff, and the development of performance-based systems, practices and procedures for maximum efficiency of office operations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration required; CPA and/or Master's degree preferred
  • At least eight years of senior management positions at the CFO level, at least five of which should be in the nonprofit sector
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles as relevant to nonprofit entities, experience with affiliated IRS 501 (c)(3) and (c)(4) organizations is strongly preferred
  • Must possess demonstrated strong management, contract and technical competence
  • Highly skilled at team building, conflict resolution and supervision of staff
  • Ability to interact professionally with senior management and program directors 
  • Ability to work independently, handling and prioritizing multiple time-sensitive projects; firm commitment to meeting deadlines 
  • Strong strategic planning skills
  • Acumen in maintaining accurate financial records and preparing clear and accurate reports for informational, auditing and operational use
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be highly motivated and committed to the mission of the Drug Policy Alliance

Salary will be commensurate with experience and previous compensation.
