Disease Prevention Summit Internship/Volunteers

The Los Angeles office of the Drug Policy Alliance seeks 3-5 interns for the Disease Prevention Demonstration Project (DPDP). Interns will work closely with the Syringe Access Pharmacy Coordinator to educate and enroll Los Angeles County pharmacies in the program. Duties include distributing DPDP literature and program information, answering questions, building relationships and encouraging/facilitating enrollment.

Interns will also have the opportunity to plan and coordinate the 2008 Los Angeles Regional Pharmacists Disease Prevention Summit. Duties include researching and securing speakers, logistics planning, advertising/promotion, materials development and project management.

To learn more about the DPDP, please visit www.helpstopaids.com.

Qualifications

Individuals should have a strong interest in HIV/hep C reduction strategies, public health issues and the rights of injection drug users to protect their health by legal access to clean needles and syringes. Volunteers must be reliable, able to travel to various cities throughout Los Angeles County and comfortable with discussing HIV and injection drug use. You must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid, unrestricted drivers license, vehicle insurance and reliable transportation. Excellent speaking and communication skills essential.

Duration

We prefer a commitment of a minimum of four hours per week for at least two months, but you may continue to volunteer as long as you wish. Volunteers are required to complete a one hour training session before being allowed to work in the field. Volunteers are reimbursed for mileage and are permitted to work very flexible hours.  This is an unpaid internship and does not offer college credit.

To Apply

Please email a cover letter and resume to Meghan Ralston, Syringe Access Pharmacy Coordinator, Disease Prevention Demonstration Project, with “Internship” in the subject line: mralston@drugpolicy.org. You can also fax to (213) 201-4781.
