Office of Legal Affairs: Syringe Access and Community Opposition to Harm Reduction Programs

Despite the recognition by communities across the country that intravenous drug use contributes to the spread of HIV, Hepatitis C and other blood-borne diseases, individuals continue to face barriers to accessing clean and safe injection equipment and health care services. Drug Policy Alliance has been involved in challenges to syringe access as well as challenging local opposition, or Not In My Backyard-ism (NIMBYism), to the siting of syringe exchange programs, health care services, and drug treatment programs.
