Office of Legal Affairs: Protection of Individual Liberties

Drug Policy Alliance is guided by the principle that individuals should be free to put whatever they choose in their own bodies. The Office of Legal Affairs is committed to upholding this principle through legal strategies that seek to protect the sanctity of individual liberties, which include individual privacy, bodily and mental integrity, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion.

Current project:
In a groundbreaking case to be heard by the United States Supreme Court in the Spring of 2003, Sell v. United States of America, Drug Policy Alliance argues for the rights of an individual to be free from forcible drugging. In this case, Charles Sell, a dentist from Kentucky, challenges the government’s attempt to inject him with antipsychotic medications in order to stand trial in a criminal case. Drug Policy Alliance submitted a friend-of-the court brief in this case.

Information on search and seizures, and forced drugging.
