Latin America's New Drug Policy Initiatives: Potentials and Pitfalls

Aug 23, 2012
Oslo, Norway

Large parts of Latin America have for many years been deeply affected by the negative effects of illegal drug trafficking including large scale public corruption and levels of violence hitherto only seen in wartime. These problems have until recently almost exclusively been confronted through increased policing and military operations, often in collaboration with the United States. However, this approach has not impeded the strengthening of increasingly violent drug trafficking organizations.

Recently a number of countries have suggested radically different approaches to regulate drug use and sale. In this seminar, director of the US-based Drug Policy Alliance, Ethan Nadelmann will discuss these proposals, their possibilities of becoming formal policies and their potential consequences.
