The Drug Policy Alliance is the nation's leading organization devoted to ending the war on drugs and advancing drug policies guided by science, compassion, health and human rights. DPA-New York pursues these goals across New York City and State through innovative campaigns, in partnership with grassroots community organizations, researchers, and service providers. Our current areas of focus include sentencing reform and expanding the use of alternatives to incarceration; cannabis policy reform, including ending mass-arrests for marijuana possession and expanding access to medical marijuana; promoting harm reduction services programs, including access to sterile syringes and overdose prevention programs; addressing racial disparities in drug laws, including policing and sentencing, and promoting racial justice and equity; and advancing health-based approaches to drug policy.

Internship Program Description

DPA's New York policy office is seeking talented undergraduate and graduate students interested in creating real alternatives to the war on drugs as part of a dynamic team. Internship activities are varied, and may include: community outreach; policy analysis; event coordination; monitoring the implementation of legislation; data collection and analysis; communications and media outreach; drafting opinion editorials (op-eds) and letters to the editor; and creating public education and advocacy materials. Some administrative tasks (e.g. photocopying, assembling packets, answering phones,) are assigned as needed.

All internships are unpaid. Where applicable, we will work with students to obtain credit towards coursework.

Qualifications and Application Procedure

DPA-NY seeks interns who can work at least 8 hours a week in the Spring/Fall, and at least 16 hours a week in the summer. There are two internship positions every cycle. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis (see deadlines for applying). Internship periods are flexible based applicant availability and the organization's needs.

The ideal candidates will be an energetic, self-motivated individual who has strong research and problem solving skills. Candidates must demonstrate interest in drug policy reform. Some prior experience in community organizing, policy advocacy and research, or administrative affairs is preferred but not necessary. Interest in working as a member of a team, and possessing a sense of humor, are essential.
