According the the results of a 1999 household telephone poll, nearly three quarters of Maryland residents support the medical use of marijuana, while less than one quarter believe that adults should be allowed to possess small amounts of marijuana for their personal use. In response to the question, "Do you think physicians should be allowed to prescribe marijuana for medical use?", 73% of those polled said yes. However, only 22% answered yes to the question, "Do you think adults 21 or older should be able to possess small ammounts of marijuana for their personal use without legal penalty?"
