Medical research and the experience of a growing number of persons with cancer, AIDS, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and other serious illnesses indicate that cannabis can function as an effective medicine with few side effects. Sadly, as part of the U.S. war on drugs, federal law prohibits the vast majority of patients who might benefit from marijuana from obtaining or using it.
For many years, scientists, the medical community, lawmakers, legal experts and others who work to prevent unnecessary suffering have defended the right of patients and doctors to use cannabis in the treatment of certain medical conditions. Currently, thirty states have taken steps toward protecting the interests of patients who benefit from such treatment. Eight states have passed medical marijuana laws that either prevent prosecution of cannabis patients or provide patients with an affirmative defense when charges are brought against them. Other states are likely to follow their lead.
These pages have been designed for medicinal marijuana patients, attorneys who represent those patients, or health professionals who treat medicinal marijuana patients. The pages can be used to access available research, court opinions and current legal implications of the use of medicinal marijuana.
