Empowering Judges to Protect Communities
Monday, January 26, 2009

Harsh and unfair prison sentences are tearing apart families and communities in New Jersey.

The state criminal justice system is seriously out of balance. There's too much emphasis on costly, ineffective mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.

If you live in New Jersey, you have an opportunity to protect people from this unjust system -- by telling the chair of the Senate Judiciary committee that you want a hearing for a bill that would restore judicial discretion.

This bill would allow judges to decide the appropriate sentence for some nonviolent drug offenses.  Its companion bill in the Assembly already passed.

Governor Jon Corzine has said he will sign the bill if it gets to his desk. This is our moment. You can help make sentencing reform a reality in New Jersey if you act now.

Sincerely,
Roseanne Scotti
