Don't Let Reform Lose Ground in California
March 28, 2006

Margatet Dooley 60 x 85It's time for us to make the politicians take notice!

In mid-April, I and hundreds of graduates of California's groundbreaking program to divert nonviolent drug offenders from prison to treatment, Prop 36, will converge on the state Capitol! As part of a large-scale campaign organized by the Drug Policy Alliance, we will demand recognition of the program's successes - and demand adequate funding so that more Californians can benefit!

The Drug Policy Alliance initiated Prop 36, co-drafted it, raised almost all the funding, and led the campaign to adopt it. Now we're leading the campaign to protect it. Prop 36 has diverted over 140,000 people into substance abuse treatment in just four years, and has saved the state hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. But Governor Schwarzenegger has proposed massive funding cuts for the program which would mean a substantial cut to services. Los Angeles alone says it would lose $16.9 million - or one-third of its total funding - under the governor's proposal.

We won't let that happen.

It's time to bring the voice of the people into the debate. With 60,000 Prop 36 graduates in the first five years, there is no shortage of folks eager to rally around the program in Sacramento. Each one of them has a powerful story to tell - but I need your help to bring them to the Capitol and make the politicians take notice.

We need to raise $4,000 in the next week for plane tickets and bus fares, so we can send Prop 36 grads from all over the state to Sacramento and make legislators sit up and listen! The rally is scheduled for April 19, and your contribution of $25, $50, $100, or even $200 now will help us lock in great deals on fares.

Donate 120

Thanks to your donation, the governor will be forced to acknowledge the program's vast support--from Prop 36 graduates themselves, as well as from millions of California voters who still believe in treatment instead of incarceration!

Thank You!

Sincerely,

Margaret Dooley
