Decriminalization Law Submitted by Brazil Health Ministry
Mon, April 21, 2003

Over recent weeks Latin American drug war bulletin, Narco News, has reported growing support for the decriminalization of drug use by the new administration in Brazil. According to the bulletin, decriminalization has now become the official policy of the Brazilian National Health Ministry.

The Health Ministry released a document entitled "The Health Ministry's Policy for Holistic Attention to Users of Alcohol and Other Drugs" supporting public health over enforcement. This could bring an end to the criminalization of drug use.

According to Narco News, the Health Ministry has submitted its proposal to Congress.

Attorney General Márcio Thomaz Bastos has apparently also announced his support for the decriminalization of drugs in a testimony to a Congressional committee this month.
