Congress Votes on Medical Marijuana
Wednesday, June 15, 2005

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives made a stronger showing in support of patients than it did last year, as 161 members (145 Democrats, 15 Republicans and 1 Independent) voted for an amendment prohibiting the federal government from undermining state medical marijuana laws. The amendment ultimately was rejected with 264 votes against, but received 13 more votes than last year. This is no doubt due to all the hard work of our supporters who contacted their members of Congress and made medical marijuana a national issue. Thanks to your support we were also able to lobby hundreds of Congressional offices in support of the bill.

Please take a minute to send a letter to your Representative thanking or spanking them depending on how they voted.

It is clear that support for medical marijuana is growing in Congress and we will eventually win. In fact, we hope this significant increase in "yes" votes will scare federal bureaucrats enough that they stop arresting sick people.

The amendment was offered by Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-22nd/NY), Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-46th/CA), Rep. Sam Farr (D-17th/CA), and Rep. Ron Paul (R-14th/TX).

Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Hinchey said "Our amendment is about compassion. Taxpayer money should not be used to arrest cancer and AIDS patients."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-8th/CA) said that "compassion is a bi-partisan value" and that both Democrats and Republicans should support the amendment.

Rep. Rohrabacher said the amendment was about states' rights and limiting the power of the federal government.
