"Hold" Put on Drug Czar Vote
Thursday, November 1, 2001

A Member on the Senate Judiciary Committee has put a "hold" on the John Walters vote, which was scheduled for Thursday, November 1 - postponing the vote until at least November 8th. This is a very good sign that Committee Members consider Mr. Walters, President Bush's proposed drug czar, to be so controversial that they need more time to debate whether or not he should be confirmed.

Senators on the Judiciary Committee have received thousands of faxes, letters, and phone calls urging them to vote against John Walters. Groups critical of Mr. Walters include the National Black Police Association, NAACP, Rainbow/Push Coalition, National Education Association, AIDS Action, Pesticide Action Network, Witness for Peace, Justice Policy Institute, National Council of La Raza, and the Betty Ford Center. A majority of Congressional Black Caucus Members have warned that "his views on race and crime make him unfit for a position that requires sensitivity to racial fairness."
