Rush Limbaugh Arrested for Possession of Prescription Drug (Viagra) Not in His Name
Unclear Whether Arrest Violates Previous Plea Agreement for Doctor Shopping

DPA’s Nadelmann: “Rush Limbaugh Has Become a Poster Child for a Drug Control Policy That is Out of Control”

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, June 27, 2006. Contact: Tony Newman

Investigators are trying to determine whether Rush Limbaugh violated a deal with prosecutors in a long-running prescription fraud case since authorities found yesterday he had a bottle of Viagra apparently prescribed to someone else.

Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, had this to say:

“What happened to Rush could happen to almost anyone, especially people who are more likely to be profiled at airports,” said Ethan Nadelmann, “As unlikely as it may seem, Rush Limbaugh has become a poster child for a drug control policy that is out of control.”

“Tens of millions of Americans take pharmaceutical drugs, sometimes many of them,” Nadelmann pointed out, “Some people like to put all their medications in one container, or a pillbox, or keep the original prescription container at home, so it does not get lost during travel. When the amount is small enough to indicate it is almost certainly for personal use, it seems ludicrous for customs or anyone else to hassle people about that.”
