Advocates who oppose mandatory minimum sentences for any offenses have been working with Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) to oppose expected amendments that would add such sentences to the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act.  The Drug Policy Alliance was asked to join this sign-on letter requesting that no mandatory minimum penalties be included in the bill.  While DPA typically does not sign letters that are not concerned primarily with drug policy, in this case our signing reflects both our general opposition to mandatory minimum sentencing, which undermines judicial discretion and contributes to mass incarceration, and our solidarity with advocacy groups who believe similarly.
